Ven Pongal | Vellai Pongal

Vellai pongal recipe, is basic pongal made with samba rice. It is one of the traditional recipe made for pongal festival in many homes in Tamilnadu. The pongal is creamy and mushy, served for two days of pongal with pongal kulambu. We make on pongal and had it as main dish on pongal day.


 

Preparation Time : 5 mins

Cooking Time : 30 mins

Total Time : 35 mins


Ingredients :

Samba rice - 2 cups.

Water - 8 cups.

Salt - As per taste.


Method :

  1. Wash the samba rice thrice.

  2. Heat water in a heavy bottom pot.

  3. Once it boils, take 2 cups of water in a vessel stock it up which can used later if required to adjust consistency.

  4. Now add rice to it, allow it to come to boil then cook in medium flame.

  5. Keep stirring occasionally and cook till rice till it is soft, mushy and creamy.

  6. Delicious and creamy vellai pongal is ready.

Serve it with Pongal Kulambu.

Notes :

  • Keep stirring occasionally this helps from rice to stick the pot.

  • Make sure the rice is mushy this goes good with pongal kulambu, sambhar.
